Introducing – In Line: 365

2013 will bring 365 individuals "in line" for Oscar's graces...

overdueIf you listened to the Awards Circuit Power Hour this week, you heard many of the staff members and myself make New Year’s Resolutions for both filmmakers and ourselves.  While I’m fully expecting (yet determined) to have my resolution of waking at 5:00 am every morning and going for a run to crash and burn, I wouldn’t be the best Awards Circuit owner I could be without bringing something to the table that could benefit our wonderful readership.  Introducing, “In Line: 365″.

Falling in line with our popular “Under the Circuit” series and “Oscar Question of the Day,” I have made a resolution to bring 365 different actors, directors, writers, craftsman, etc, who haven’t had their dance with Oscar yet but seem to be “in line” for a nomination or even a win.  After doing a brief profile of their past works, I will leave our readership to discuss in the comment section if their dream as an Oscar nominee falls under the following categorizations:

  • HEPBURN = It’s inevitable they will be win an Oscar (or two, or three, or four) someday.
  • O’TOOLE = Oscar nominations could be in their future but it’s unclear if they will win an Oscar.
  • DEMILLE = Give or take a lifetime achievement award, the person will likely never win.

I hope you all enjoy the series this year as well as everything that the Awards Circuit will offer and leave plenty of ideas of who to cover along the way.

Happy New Year Awards Circuit!

Looking forward to reading your profiles! But I do take offense at your classification, at the height of their careers O’Toole and DeMille were clearly in the Hepburn league, deserving to win several oscars. So now we don’t just have to determine if such or such candidate is oscar-worthy but also if they’re likely to get snubbed by the Academy (btw DiCaprio is clearly going the O’Toole way so far). Plus DeMille did win best picture for The Greatest Show on Earth, sure he didn’t win best director but he didn’t leave empty-handed either. Imo Hitchcock and Kubrick were much bigger snubs, Rebecca did win best picture but Hitchcock wasn’t credited as a producer, and Kubrick only won vfx for 2001 even though he was nominated 5 times for screenplay, 4 times for directing and 3 times for best picture.

He’s not saying DeMille was any less deserving than Hepburn. He is saying “Hepburn” means the win is inevitable because she won several. And “DeMille” means they will likely never win, not because DeMille wasn’t deserving, but because, well, he never won an Oscar (outside of a lifetime achievement award).

DeMille won Best Picture for Greatest show on earth. sorry i just don’t find this classification relevant and inclusive enough but i love the idea of comparing today’s oscars candidates to past figures!

Isn’t it interesting that Brad Pitt and Michael Fassbender both will appear in two films this year (2013): “Twelve Years a Slave” and “The Counselor”. Brad will be pushed for another Oscar nomination (for sure) and Michael for overdue first nom…. and there is Leo with 2 projects (“Gatsby” and “Wolf of WS”)… Looks like really good year for best actor race again.

As it always will be, right? And don’t forget The Monuments Men, which has a pretty stellar cast full of deserving non-winners like Matt Damon, John Goodman, Daniel Craig, and Bill Murray, alongside former winners George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, and Jean Dujardin.

Looking forward to this series if only because it will encourage me to see a wider range of films and actors.
