The Art Directors Guild honors excellence in production design in film. They divide their awards into three categories: Period, Fantasy, and Contemporary. So being that there are 15 nominees, it doesn’t give away too much as far as where the chips may fall with Oscar, though it can do some serious damage for your film if not among the nominees. The most noticeable film absent? The Master, who after missing with SAG and PGA, seems all but finished.
Presumed frontrunners Lincoln, Les Miserables, and Anna Karenina all received citations, while Tarantino’s Django Unchained shows up once again (it was previously nominated by the Producers Guild). So if you are keeping score: the stock is way up on Django, and way down on The Master. Another film to keep an eye on is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (which also received the SAG Ensemble nom). Love from the guilds is always a telling sign that a film’s Oscar chances might be more than we are expecting. We’ll find out the winners for the 17th annual Art Directors Guild Awards on February 2.

Why Life of Pi? Most of it is at the same spot. Lol. But great to see Cloud Atlas.

The Master all but finished? I’m beginning to sound like a broken record here, but there is no way The Master doesn’t get nominated for BP, Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress.

I’d say yes for BP and Supp. Actor (though it depends on the number of BP nominees). I think it’s weakened in Actor and S. Actress. But I am still predicting it for all those, because I freaking love the movie and expect the actors to go for it with passionate support for Phoenix. I’m also hoping that the LAFCA rule will give PTA his deserved nomination for BD.

Agreed, although I see PTA getting snubbed due to the movie’s lack of appearances in the precursors. Maybe he’ll slide in like Malick (who got a nod for a very poor movie last year) because he too is popular with the academy.
