    James-Bond-Skyfall

Following Skyfall’s Producers Guild nomination for Best Picture, AMPAS has announced that they will be celebrating 50 Years of James Bond at the 85th Academy Awards ceremony. As time dwindles down before the nominations are announced (January 10th), it is becoming harder and harder to leave Skyfall out of the Best Picture mix. Could this be the first Bond film to earn such an honor? We’ll find out next week.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA – The 85th Academy Awards® will include a tribute to the James Bond movie franchise, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year, the telecast’s producers announced today.

“We are very happy to include a special sequence on our show saluting the Bond films on their 50th birthday,” said producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. “Starting with ‘Dr. No’ back in 1962, the 007 movies have become the longest-running motion picture franchise in history and a beloved global phenomenon.”

The 85th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2012 will be presented on Oscar® Sunday, February 24, 2013, at the Dolby Theatre™ at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

    1. The big question now is does this special acknowledgement necessitate a BP nom or Skyfall or substitute one? Will the Acdemy need pair the first ever Bond BP nom with the special occasion, or figure the separate acknowledgement to be sufficient?

      • Good question. This might be considered acknowledgement enough from a usually stuffy Academy. I have it in the 11th spot right now and am torn between Skyfall and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel for the final spot (which way will the Brits go?). Flip a coin. I think 9 get in and it could be a moot point anyway.

        • I don’t think either of them will be nominated for ‘Best Picture’. It’ll either be 9 nominees (like last year), or we could actually see ‘The Master’ getting a BP nod (the 10th spot).

    2. Watch out for Skyfall. It gets best song, pic, director, bumping Tom Hooper. …very possible at least…

      • Sam Mendes for director? Even AMPAS wouldn’t go as far as that…

      • There is NO way Sam Mendes will be nominated for Best Director (even if Hooper is left out. As such, Hooper’s chances of being nominated are not that great). IMHO the Best Director line-up will be: Ben Affleck, Kathryn Bigelow, Ang Lee, David O’Russell, and Steven Spielberg.

But coming back to ‘Skyfall’, my predicted categories are:
        1. Supporting Actor – The SAG nod came out of nowhere for Javier Bardem, and it works heavily in his favour (as such, he had zero momentum when he had previously been nominated for ‘Biutiful’)
        2. Cinematography – could we please give Roger Deakins at least one Oscar??
        3. Sound Mixing – no brainer
        4. Sound Editing – no brainer
        5. Original Song – Adele’s winning this one, hands down

I think Judi Dench has a better chance to be in contention for ‘Marigold Hotel’ than ‘Skyfall’ to be honest. And, I think the ‘Best Picture’ nomination will most likely not happen (even though I want it to happen). And, according to me, this tribute will be a substitute of sorts for the Best Picture nomination, as if to say,”Hey, look, we haven’t forgotten you”.

        • I currently have the same 5 for Director. But it is so hard to leave Hooper out. Les Mis seems like it will have a LOT of fans.

And apparently great minds think a like, as I have Bond up for the same 5 noms. Vis FX and BP are possibilities as well.
