  • Directors Guild of America Predictions

With ballots already in, can the director's shed some light on what we can see on Thursday morning...?

    January 7, 2013

directors_guild_of_america_logoThe Directors Guild of America will be announcing their nominees tomorrow.  I’m including my predictions down below.  Last year, the wrench thrown in the works was David Fincher for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.  Perhaps we get another curveball tomorrow but I’m anticipating we’re going get answers we already knew like the top five films are firmly in there give or take an Ang Lee.

I think on a mass level (at least directorial), the guild may not warm up to Tom Hooper along with Paul Thomas Anderson.  David O. Russell would likely receive the biggest boost from the guild since he seems extremely vulnerable for a Director’s bid.  If you listened to the podcast earlier, I expressed my feeling about the possibility of Benh Zeitlin having an opportunity to pop up since his stamp of the film was in many way, the poster board for DIY for future directors.  I guess we’ll see.

    In Line: John Cusack

#6- Will this likable actor ever have a date with Oscar?

    January 7, 2013

    john-cusack-imageOscar Track Record: Never Nominated

I’m standing in for Clayton today and contributing the latest in the daily In Line series. It’s no secret that John Cusack is one of my favorite actors in the business, and when I tell people that he’s never been nominated for an Academy Award, a surprising percentage of them are shocked. Their disbelief is warranted, as Cusack has delivered a number of memorable performances in his career, ranging from his breakout in Say Anything…(1989) to his terrific turn in Woody Allen‘s Bullets Over Broadway (1994) to his Golden Globe nominated role in High Fidelity (2000). Cusack was also unjustly ignored by pretty much everyone for his baity performance in Grace is Gone (2007), perhaps a signal that Oscar isn’t too interested in the man yet.

IMDb currently lists Cusack as having a 70 film resume, and it speaks to his undervalued talent that fewer of them are romantic comedies than you’d think. In fact, of late he’s been mostly mired in a string of action flicks, which have had varying degrees of quality and success attached to them (one has been shelved for years and a few more are on the way). He’s been able to mix in heavy dramas, horror, thrillers, and even a sci-fi film or two. Give or take the past couple of years, he’s always been able to elevate whatever he was in, and as audience members we were more interested in said projects because of his participation.

deceptionfulllongOff a pure glance at the premise, it would be hard to convince even the least erudite TV watcher that Deception wasn’t just simply masquerading as NBC’s answer to another soapy drama concerning the rich. But I am here to tell you that Deception is not just some carbon copy of another network’s ratings hit. Sure it’s messy and kind of ridiculous like all good soaps, but there are some interesting power dynamics and plotting, as well as an affected performance by Meagan Good at is center, that should help keep the show afloat. ACADEMY_IDOL_6If you listened (or haven’t listened yet) to the Awards Circuit Power Hour from this week, the Top 9 Results for the Awards Circuit game, Academy Idol, were announced at the top of the episode.

Not revealing the Bottom Three or what film was eliminated, the voting period has just opened up for this week.  Like last year, “#1 Votes Week” only allows YOU to vote only ONE TIME during the week.  So keep in mind, the film you really want to stay, should be the film that gets your vote this week.

Looking forward to the results.  Voting closes Thursday night at midnight eastern time.

    Django Unchained International Poster

Happy New Year! To kick the first week off with Oscar tension is so exciting! There is no better way to start the new year than with healthy competition that the entire world is watching. Internationally, ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey‘ (WB) claims #1 in several countries, but #3 domestically. The epic and inspiring journey did, however, place 6th for the year of 2012.
