BAFTA announces their nominees tomorrow. This is the first time they haven’t released a long list so we could see what was in contention. So we’re pretty much just throwing darts at this point. Anna Karenina, Les Miserables, and Lincoln should have a decent showing followed by Skyfall and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. You can include your predictions in the comment section.

Below are some of the reactions from our nominated directors from the guild earlier today.
“I am proud and humbled to be receiving this nomination from my guild. It means so much to be recognized by my peers and I am truly grateful for this honor. Life of Pi was a true collaboration that involved gifted artists both in front of and behind the camera. I share this nomination with every person that I had the good fortune to work with on this film.”
-Ang Lee, Life of Pi
“The privilege of making LINCOLN, combined with this absolutely tremendous recognition from my peers, is humbling. I thank everyone for including me on this short list of extremely unique and gifted filmmakers.”
-Steven Spielberg, Lincoln

The Cinema Audio Society recognizes excellence in Sound Mixing (or Sound, as it used to be called). The nominees for the 49th Annual CAS Awards have been announced in six categories, and the winners will be unveiled on February 16th. The CAS doesn’t always line up exactly with Oscar, and though usually a nomination here can only help your chances there, the Oscar ballots have already been turned in and thus we are in a predicament where we’re not sure what to make of these nominations. While expected frontrunners like Les Mis and Skyfall are present, other contenders like The Avengers, The Dark Knight Rises, and Django Unchained are noticeably absent. Have a look after the jump.

In a matter of days now, the nominees for the 85th Academy Awards will be revealed. Some of us will be thrilled at the films and performances cited, while others will be disappointed. The thing to remember though, which I mentioned on the latest Power Hour, is that we all won as film lovers in 2012. However the nominations turn out, the ones truly being honored were audiences. People in my position spend countless hours pouring over what might happen, but we rarely stop to smell the roses. Honestly, a lot of that has to do with not having reason to, but this past year of movies is a horse of a different color. I’ve done months of prognostication, but for a moment on nearly the eve of the Oscar nominations, I want to do a little bit of appreciating for a change. I may not have loved every movie, and I downright hated a group of them, but for my money this was the best year movie fans have had in some time, and that remains the case even when just thinking about likely awards contenders. Talk about a rare year!

The North Texas Film Critics Association has honored Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln with four of their awards, including Best Picture. It is even more of a feat when considering the group only hands out seven awards that the film was eligible for. Have a look at the winners after the jump.

This week, a pair of potential Oscar nominees hit Blu-Ray and DVD, along with a bunch of other varied titles. It’s not an extraordinarily good day of releases, but it’s hardly a bad one either, which is a victory early on in any year. There’s also a few TV movies worth mentioning…a rarity in this column, but it makes sense this time around, trust me. My top pick isn’t an amazingly hard choice, but I did contemplate going in another direction. In the end, my PICK OF THE WEEK is one of the more divisive flicks of 2012, and one that is hoping to score an acting nomination on Thursday. Many of you know the title already, but for those not on to it yet, here is what it is: Read more on Joey’s DVD Picks of the Week (1/08/2013)…

The Visual Effects Society (VES) has announced their nominees for the VES Awards, and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey leads the pack with seven nominations. Life of Pi (presumed by many to be the favorite come Oscar time) and The Avengers are right behind the furry-footed hobbits with six nods. We’ll have to wait until February 5th to find out who wins, but you can have a look at the entire slate of nominees after the jump.
