Some of the directors share their thoughts and thanks...

Life of Pi (Ang Lee)Below are some of the reactions from our nominated directors from the guild earlier today.

“I am proud and humbled to be receiving this nomination from my guild. It means so much to be recognized by my peers and I am truly grateful for this honor. Life of Pi was a true collaboration that involved gifted artists both in front of and behind the camera. I share this nomination with every  person that I had the good fortune to work with on this film.”

-Ang Lee, Life of Pi

“The privilege of making LINCOLN, combined with this absolutely tremendous recognition from my peers, is humbling.  I thank everyone for including me on this short list of extremely unique and gifted filmmakers.”

    My predictions were Affleck, Bigelow, Hooper, Spielberg, and Tarantino but I’m truly glad Lee is in place of Tarantino. It’s a good group and well worth repeating for the Academy nominations.

    @Jaime

    My predictions were the same as well. I would like to see someone else instead of Hooper though.

      I wanted to see David O’Russell instead of Tom Hooper. Everything else was the same for me.

      I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve posted about Tom Hooper standing no chance of being nominated in such an already crowded directing field this year. And the main reason for it is that, in my opinion, ‘Les Miserables’ seems to be the most actor-driven film this year (rather than being director-driven). If you watch the Extended First-Look of ‘Les Mis’, you will see how much work the actors themselves have put into their characters (without the ‘help’ of the director). For instance, if ‘Valjean’s Soliloquy (What Have I Done)’ in the film sounds slightly different to its stage version, it’s because Hugh Jackman chose to do it that way (and NOT because Tom Hooper wanted that particular rendition). Hooper’s only big decision in ‘Les Mis’ was to ask his actors to sing live on set. And, once the actors agreed to do it, it was all down to them as to what they made of their characters. Hooper didn’t have much of a role to play after that.

    I enjoyed SLP a lot, but there was nothing special about Russell’s directing. On the other hand, whether the end result was good or not, it’s Hooper who had the more challenging job, when it comes right down to it.

    @Rico
    It doesn’t matter if it was more challenging the fact is that he didn’t pull it off.
