The nominees for the 27th annual American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) awards have been announced, and the
Oscar frontrunners – Life of Pi, Skyfall, and Lincoln – are present as expected. Rounding out the field are Les Miserables and Anna Karenina, who most likely edged out other expected contenders such as The Master and Zero Dark Thirty. Wait, what? The Master missed on another guild? At this point, the biggest shock to me on Thursday morning would be to see that film in the Best Picture lineup. The ASC awards will be handed out on February 10th, and you can have a look at the full nominee list after the jump.
Anna Karenina, Seamus McGarvey, ASC, BSC
Les Miserables, Danny Cohen, BSC
Life of Pi, Claudio Miranda, ASC
Lincoln, Janusz Kaminski
Skyfall, Roger Deakins, ASC, BSC

I think Zero Dark Thirty will still wind up in tomorrow morning, but this could very closely resemble the Oscar lineup…

Agree. Anna Karenina seems like the odd man out here.

The ASC and BAFTA cinematography line-ups are identical. Anyone else noticed that?

Could it be your bias is showing. How are Life of Pi and Skyfall “Oscar Front Runners” and Les Miserables which is virtually tied in major nominations with Lincoln just “rounding out the field”?

I think maybe you misunderstood me. I was saying Les Mis was not an Oscar frontrunner in THIS category. Clearly Les Mis is a super strong contender for Oscar, period (whereas Skyfall is not, see?). But Pi, Lincoln, and Skyfall have long been thought to be near “locks” (if there is such a thing) in this category, while Les Mis, Anna, The Master, and ZDT have been strong possibilities.

If the Academy does indeed nominate ‘Les Mis’ for cinematography tomorrow, it’s going to be a real slap in the face of all those people who thought that it was a bad idea to have those Dutch angles in the film.
