    emperor

The first trailer for director Peter Webber’s Emperor has been released. The film is based on the true story of the investigation into whether or not the Emperor of Japan should be convicted for war crimes, following the end of World War II. General Douglas MacArthur (Tommy Lee Jones) was assigned the task, and takes on the assistance of  General Bonner Fellers (LOST’s Matthew Fox). As an enormous fan of LOST, I have been hoping for Matthew Fox to breakthrough on the big screen for years, but after starring in mediocre films like Vantage Point, Speed Racer, and Alex Cross, I’m beginning to worry that if things don’t break right for the underrated actor soon, they might just never. Watch the trailer after the jump, and see the film March 8th.

Are we six weeks away from seeing ‘Argo’ make history?

Ben Affleck's film could still win Best Picture, even with his Best Director snub...

    January 18, 2013

Ben-Affleck-best-director-009Well, here we are. The Golden Globes only managed to confuse us more about the Oscar race, something I wasn’t sure was actually possible. It’s almost as if every phase of the season has thrown us for a new loop. A few months ago I wrote a piece (found here) that spoke about why I had ‘Argo’ as the frontrunner. That remained the case until a few weeks ago, when I moved towards ‘Zero Dark Thirty’ based on its exceptional critics awards run. Then, the Oscar nominations happened and suddenly we didn’t see Ben Affleck or Kathryn Bigelow nominated, making me doubt that either film could win. I was expecting to mostly be moving away from them, but then the Globes on Sunday brought me back to Affleck’s film. It’s definitely not the frontrunner, but I think it remains a viable Best Picture player. Unlikely, yes…but we’d also be looking at a juicy rarity in the world of the Academy Awards.

Based on my calendar’s scheduled award events, The Motion Picture Sound Editors Guild is the last guild to weigh in MPSEwith their “best of the year” nominations. The only Oscar nominee for Best Sound Editing not mentioned by the guild was Zero Dark Thirty, which is even more damning considering the guild nominates eight films in three different categories. Have a look at the list of nominees after the jump, and stay tuned until February 17th to find out who wins!

    RED-2

Bruce Willis, John Malkovich, Helen Mirren, and Mary-Louise Parker are back for the sequel to the action/comedy film, Red. In Red 2, the returning gang will be joined by Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Brian Cox. I think anyone who has seen the first film knows what to expect, and this snippet from the synopsis pretty much says all you need to know: “Retired black-ops CIA agent Frank Moses reunites his unlikely team of elite operatives for a global quest to track down a missing portable nuclear device. To succeed, they’ll need to survive an army of relentless assassins, ruthless terrorists and power-crazed government officials.” Watch the teaser after the jump.

    American-Idol-Season-12-Randy-Jackson-Mariah-Carey-Ryan-Seacrest-Nicki-Minaj-Keith-Urban-400x300

When it comes to reality television, American Idol is where my heart lies. As corny as that sounds, it is absolutely true. For ten years, I have watched every season, seen every episode, and rooted for god knows how many contestants to win. Not a single year has a favorite of mine won American Idol, and that still never stops me because at the end of the day this show is supposed to find superstars, and it has certainly lived up to its promise tenfold! After watching the premiere this season, I have figured out Idol‘s winning formula. Yes, you need an eclectic judging panel that spices up your television screen — and believe me, Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey do the trick plenty! But when it comes right down to why no show matches Idol in the ratings or in the charts — where it counts and why such shows should exist — the answer is simple and pure: our journey with the contestants is a personal one. X-Factor and The Voice put on these huge productions and force contestants to be stars before we even get a chance to know them. That seems phony to us, even though it’s probably what goes on more often than not in the music biz. With American Idol, we witness the natural progression that a contestant makes on their way to becoming a star, and that authentic process, powerful in its intimacy, is why we rush out to buy an American Idol winner’s first album in droves (…unless you’re Lee DeWyze). The long journey through the audition stage, to Hollywood, into the Semifinals, and voting every round of the Finals makes us feel as though we, as Americans, have helped pave their career for them. It’s a joint effort between talent on-stage and nationwide support that transitions the contestant from “you-and-me,” to superstar a la Kelly Clarkson. This is why American Idol is still the best of the singing competition shows, still the best reality show on television. American Idol, for better or worse, is an all-encompassing event that irrefutably lives up to its title. With that said, we now enter Season Twelve… Read more on ‘American Idol’ Week 1 Wrap-Up: Top 5 Contestants to Watch from New York & Chicago…

Fresh off her Golden Globe win, Jessica Chastain is compounding her box-office presence with a resume diversifier in the Guillermo Del Torro presented horror flick, Mama.  She’s duking it out against herself in Zero Dark Thirty and against Broken City, in which Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg duke it out.  Oh, and Arnold wants to do some duking of his own against some bad guys in his comeback to acting with The Last Stand.
