Entire Staff of Awards Circuit Release Their Ten Best Films!

The personal ten from the finest team of Oscar prognosticating...

top-101I love this website. I love this staff. I’m constantly in awe of their talents, personalities, and what each of them brings to the table. I don’t always tell them how much I appreciate them but I sincerely do. I keep finding myself admired by their eclectic choices in not only films but in the way they express themselves about the films they love.

If its not Terence’s exasperated sighs when a film or performance receives praise that he feels should not have; or Mark’s on-going quest to make people believe he is the living example of an Academy member; or Joey’s obsession with any rom-com where the pretty girl is too quirky for the real world; or Robert’s mandatory persistence to analyze a film down to its bare bones; or Mike’s zealous, indescribable manner to express his praise or disdain for a film he just saw (just ask him about ‘Movie 43‘); or Anna’s gutter-mouth about a film that touched her soul or blew up a big spaceship; or Nicole’s quiet confidence to tell you that no matter what you thought, The Master was a masterpiece; or Tiff Chai’s enthusiastic and plea to get international cinema recognized; or finally, Joseph Braverman’s realization that he lives on an island all-alone about The Eagle, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

This the best composition of writing talents anywhere on the internet and not because we’re from different parts of the world. It’s because we respect each other but more importantly, we respect film. He or she, depending on who you ask, beats in all of us, down to our souls, deep, flowing, and present on every part of our lives. We hold daytime jobs to fund an obsession that honestly, may never come to fruition in the “Facebook” sense, but damn it, we’ll die trying. We are the definition of the starving artists. Living for our craft. Living for film. I wouldn’t have it any other way. My love letter to all of you.  I’m grateful and I look forward to an AMAZING 2013 with you all by my side.

I’m proud to present the entire staff of AwardsCircuit.com and their choices for their personal ten best films of 2012. Hope you enjoy!

Sorry Clayton, but I couldn’t read the rest of your list once I saw Les Mis at #1. Eesh.

I went to the see Les Miserables with a great deal of apprehension after hearing the negative rumors floating around. I wound up having a wonderful time and engrossed with the acting, story, music, and visuals. I saw the original musical on Broadway and I think Tom Hooper did a terrific job holding the multi-character story together with very little slack. Certainly not perfect, but it made my best list.

I second this. In fact, the only reason I went and searched out Liberal Arts was on Joey’s recommendation all those months back. One of my favourite times of the year is getting Joey’s top ten and learning about the great little films that go almost unseen.

Now I’m off to see Ruby Sparks!

Good call on Haywire, Joseph. It’s at number 18 for me, but only because it was such a great year for movies. I actually had 26 movies that I really, really enjoyed this year, and many of them would make it onto top-10 lists on other, less impressive years. And I agree with Nicole, The Master was ‘the best’ movie of the year.

    1. Killing Them Softly
    2. The Dark Knight Rises
    3. Looper
    4. The Grey
    5. The Avengers
    6. Seven Psychopaths
    7. Skyfall
    8. Silver Linings Playbook
    9. The Master
    10. Cabin in the Woods
    11. Dredd (now this is an awesome island to be on)

Thanks, Steve! I’ve had to hold in my love for this film for a VERY long time. (Saw it in 2011 at AFI Fest). I am increasingly impressed by the innovations made in the action genre as of late. Loved ‘MI:4′ and ‘The Raid: Redemption,’ and ‘Haywire’ was something very special indeed. Love your list, by the way!

I have always thought that watching movies (as reading books) is an experience that´s closely tied to our own life experience. So what I find interesting or moving is really something that´s totally different fron anyone else. Actually I would even say that is a question of how you feel at the moment that you see the movie or read the book. Sometimes a movie touches you but when you see it a couples of years after and it isn´t the same. Anyway ….am digressing….

My top 10 has a sort of european vibe to it, because I live in Madrid. Anyway here it goes:

1- Blancanieves by Pablo Berger.-It may have the same concept as The Artist ( by the way, it went into production the same year as he aforementioned film) a silent movie in black and white) ,but I think that this movie is a tribute to the silent era (The Artist wast a tribute to the Hollywood silent era; but this goes far beyond). It reminds you of the german movies of the 30´s, of the universal horror movies of the same decade and of how easy it was to show emotions without CGI.Adding to this is a totally spanish setting that feels incredible pure for a story that is based on the Brother´s Grimm Fairytale…Ok I must admit that I´m quite the film history buff ,so all those references might have influenced me. Seldom you see as an spectator a pure case of cinema.

2-Barbara .This is a really well told story, especially if you know amount of paranoia that anyone lives in a communist state). I found it incredible straight forward without diminishing it´s power to showing the audience how hard it was during that time.

3- Rust and Bone. I must say that being a male I normally don´t like corny love stories;but the characters in this film really won me over. I think that they were really believable. Hey…I´m human, so my crush on Marion Cotillard probably counts.

4- Looper.I have been disappointed with must of the Sci Fi films that I have seen in the last couple of years (Hated Avatar….Applauded District 9 and Monsters). In this case, the film really blew me over. I loved the concept (and the acting and the production design), even if the film had it´s flaws.

5- Life Of Pi. I think that movies have the power to trasport you to a different reality that what your´re used to. I spent this whole movie amazed and even though I thought the ending was predictable, the ride was more than worth the taking.

6- Argo. This is the sort of movie, that gives you more than what you expect. I think that the mixture of suspense, drama and comedy was really well handled. The funny thing is, that in Europe this is categorized as a commercial or ultra multiplex film, which I know is not the case in the U.S,

7- Hara Kiri by Takashi Miike (2011). Movie distribution is quite an enigma. This movie came to Spain a whole year in delay, but I found it (even that I had seen the original) quite well done: I kept the whole drama and angst of the original but showed it in a different way (to my viewing).

    8. El Artista Y La Modelo by Fernando Trueba. This is a movie in french by a spanish director. It´s also in b&w and incredibly well made, It´s simple, but it reminded me of the wonderful “La Belle Noiseuse” by Jacques Rivette. I don´t know, maybe I´m intrigued by the interaction between artists and their muses (a nod to Mother by Albert Brooks).

    9. Moonrise Kingdom. Ok….I¨m going to be sincere, the worlds that Wes Anderson creates are totally incredible to me. Sometimes they might seem cartoonish, but I think that their is a whole lot of truth in the background. And I might be wrong, but his characters are always really fun to watch.

    10. Césare Debe Morir by Marco and Vitorio Taviani. I really love theater and I have always thought that directing a play is quite difficult. This whole movie is a mixture of documentary and live filmed theater. The must astonishing thing is that all the actors are inmates of a high security roman prison.

Sorry for such a long post…Wish you all the best. Congrats from Spain…

Although I had mixed feelings about Killer Joe (it didn’t work for me as well as it did on stage), I did like it a lot. Not enough for my top ten, but I’m glad someone appreciated it as much as you did and gave it some love. McConaughey is fantastic in it.

I never saw the stage show but the film blew me away. Also, I dont know how I missed Seven Psychopath, which should be in my list at #2 , pushing Skyfall out.
Sam Rockwell and McConaughey gave two of the most incredible performances of 2012.

Makes me sick to see the terrible tragedy that was The Dark Knight Rises on so many list. What a disgrace to the otherwise perfect career of Christopher Nolan. He should have stopped on those movies while he was ahead. I lol’d when i read Chai’s list, but you’ve got to love that style :P
