The Directors Guild of America will be announcing their winners later today. The big question is Ben Affleck and Argo making the uphill climb to win Best Picture on Oscar night. While, I’m not totally convinced yet, I do believe it is very much in the running with Lincoln.
A lot of money has been put behind Lincoln’s campaign and it is the type of film that usually gains voters attention à la The King’s Speech and Shakespeare in Love. The period piece with an outstanding performance by one of the greatest living actors is sure to pull some votes. If Argo is winning Best Picture though, who is winning Best Director?
Speculation exists that Spielberg could be winning in a walk but I think if Spielberg is winning Director, Picture should come without question. If Lincoln is in fact, losing Best Picture, I’d expect someone like Ang Lee or even more surprising, Michael Haneke or David O. Russell to pull it off.
The DGA will prove Argo’s power. We’ll be talking in-depth analysis on Sunday’s Power Hour, so make sure you stand by for that.
My predictions are down below:
FILM
Predicted Winner - Ben Affleck
MOVIES FOR TELEVISION OR MINI-SERIES
Predicted Winner - Jay Roach
DRAMATIC SERIES
Predicted Winner - Michael Cuesta
COMEDY SERIES
Predicted Winner - Lena Dunham

Why can’t Spielberg win director and not picture? What’s the reasoning? I think this year will be very similar to The Pianist vs. Chicago, with Lincoln getting Director, Actor and Screenplay but Argo taking Picture.

The Picture/Director split is a freak occurrence when it happens.
Spielberg winning along with Kushner, Day-Lewis, and Jones, would show a lot of support for “Lincoln.” It would be very weird for it not to win Picture in the end with all those in its favor. On the other hand, if you see someone like Ang Lee winning Director, that shows weakness for Lincoln and then I would for sure say “Argo” would be winning Best Picture.
That’s just my two cents.

The Affleck snub is the most interesting part of this race. We have some wild and crazy statistics to be blown out of the water this award season. DDL winning Oscar 3? Speilberg winning Oscar 3? Argo winning BP with no director? Those are crazy stats, and they are all realistic possibilities! Fun stuff! My gut tells me that either Spielberg or DDL will miss for Lincoln though. Not sure they’ll give them both the Oscar. My money’s on Haneke for the steal.

I’m thinking Ben Affleck, and certainly hope that it is, but a win for Ang Lee or Steven Spielberg would certainly clear up the Oscar race a bit…

Just thought I should mention this, but when I go to the Awards Circuit homepage, and then click on one of the articles, using my IPhone, for some reason instead of going to the article, I end up, and I’m not even kidding, at a porn website. When I use my actual computer this doesn’t happen, so I wasn’t sure if the site maybe had a virus or if its just my iPhone, but I thought I should say something anyways cause it was funny at first but now it’s irritating.

I really don’t believe Spielberg needs another win – so I’m hoping he’s completely shut out. I’m hoping Ben Affleck or Ang Lee wins.

If Ben Affleck wins, is he winning because he did the best job (b/c I’d say Bigelow really deserves it this time around, far more so than for HL) or because he didn’t get nominated for an Oscar? I don’t think I can tell anymore if it’s about craft or pity.

I think it’ll be more about craft, because he won best director at Critics Choice and Globes, and the voting for those ended before his snub was announced. I’m sure there will be some pity votes, but I think if he wins it’ll be because they think he did the best job.

No worries, cause for all I know you could be right and it could be about pity, and I guarantee you’re not alone in your thinking.
