Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby has been tapped to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival on May 15th. Following in the
footsteps of Pixar’s Up (2009) and Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood (2010), this is the third big budget Hollywood film in the last five years to open the festivities. To keep with tradition, however, the opening night film will screen out of competition. Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge also opened Cannes back in 2001. Gatsby is currently slated for a May 10th release date, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see that get pushed back now that it has a date with Cannes.

I hope this isn’t pushed back too far…since it’s not in competition, I’m less sure if they will, but since my dream Gatsby/Django Christmas Day double-feature was denied, my approval of any further delays would be a dubious proposition at best.

I can see this go for lots of oscars since its going in the same route at Moulin Rouge (that was also supposed to come out the Christmas before

Thinking of a bunch of stuffy French critics wearing 3D glasses makes me giggle.

Believe it or not, an early screening reported Joel Edgerton steals the movie. If that’s the case, then I’ll have to see it.
