Synopsis: Diana tells the story of the last two years of Princess Diana’s life, including her relationships with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan and Dodi Fayed. Diana will also include her role in the campaign against land mines.

Why it Could Succeed: Historical biographies seem to be the popular film to make as of late and Diana, the story of Princess Diana is the next biography receiving awards buzz. Many admire Princess Diana to the point of obsession and the simple fact that this film depicts the last two years of her life will get a lot of people’s attention. The Academy loves performances that require transformation, and if Watts pulls it off to perfection she could be looking at another nomination. Her great success in 2012 only gave Diana more hope in viewer’s eyes and academy lovers. Even I believe she could win based on a snapshot of her resemblance to Princess Diana. If this film succeeds, not only will viewers be satisfied but the Academy will have no problem nominating Watts for Best Actress again.

Why it Could Fail: Princess Diana is such an important topic and to get it wrong would be a slap in the face to the legacy she left behind. This is screenwriter Stephen Jeffery’s second film, his first being The Libertine, a film that had very little success with Johnny Depp as the star. If he messes up the story of Princess Diana many will be so disappointed it won’t matter how good the performances are. But, if Diana turns out to be a success, the only way I could see it failing is if the release isn’t handled properly. If it’s too limited many won’t see it and it could get left behind like most films do when it comes to the Academy.

    Awards Speculation:
I honestly don’t believe the topic is juicy enough for the Academy to nominate the film outside the Best Actress category. The only exciting thing about this film is how her death will be portrayed, other than that this will be the Naomi Watts show.

    2. I have Watts in the #1 spot to start the year. She’s due, it’s baity enough, and it is a biopic.

      • Mark Johnson,

Ugh, Mark, why ya gotta copy me with Leo and Naomi? LOL. Just kidding man, I rationalize our choices to great minds thinking alike. And yes, the woman is due but be very wary of Meryl Streep.

    3. I can’t wait to see this. In contrast with Nicole Kidman playing Grace, she really looks like Diana and is believable in the role.

    4. The King (Firth) gave it to the Prime Minister (Streep) who gave it to the President (Day-Lewis) who will give it to the Princess (Watts). Kinda boring.

    5. I would be shocked if this wasn’t a baity, boring hagiography. I’ll be glad if Watts wins, but otherwise I’m not looking forward to this one.

    6. I like Naomi Watts, but the film I’m looking forward to with her is the projected one with Werner Herzog directing (I hope it happens). Watts would play Gertrude Bell, a kind of real life female Lawrence of Arabia. Both Watts and Herzog can be so daring on their headlong pursuit of the artistic journey. If the Princess Di movie softens people up to think that it’s really time to pay more attention to Watts, I’m all for it.
