Your Oscar predictions will need to be updated. It was previously assumed that David O. Russell’s upcoming Abscam projectRussell would not be released until 2014, but you know what they say about assuming, right? It now appears that the untitled film based on the true story of “An FBI sting operation in the 1970s called Abscam that leads to the conviction of United States Congressmen” will see be seen this year. More details after the jump.

Sony Pictures has announced a December 13th limited release date, with plans to take the film wide on Christmas Day. Russell reunites with his Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, his stars from The Fighter, Amy Adams and Christian Bale, and adds Jeremy Renner and Louis CK for a little icing on the cake.

As far as my charts are concerned, I have slotted the Abscam Film/David O. Russell #3 for Picture and Director, behind The Monuments Men/George Clooney and The Wolf of Wall Street/Martin Scorsese. Russell has been on Oscar’s doorstep for a few years now, receiving Picture and Director nominations for both The Fighter (2010) and Silver Linings Playbook (2012). Between those two films, three actors have won Oscars for their performances (Bale and Melissa Leo in The Fighter, Lawrence in SLP). So the odds seem pretty good that one or more of the actors in the Abscam movie will at the very least receive nominations. Without knowing much about their roles yet, the one I’d most like to see win the Oscar is Amy Adams, who like Russell, has been knocking on Oscar’s door for the last few years. Adams has been nominated four times over the last eight years, so she is someone who is certainly due to win.

What are your hopes for this film? Where do you think it could receive nominations?

    1. After going ten years with only one film released I guess he’s ready to work nonstop. I loved The Fighter and Silver Linings Playook so this has jumped to the top of my list of movies I’m looking forward to most this year.
