Paul Edward Valentine Giamatti turned 46 on June 6. Giamatti’s first big role came in the Howard Stern film, Private Parts (1997), playing the loathsome Kenny “Pig Vomit” Rushton. His career continued with supporting turns in films like The Truman Show (1998), Saving Private Ryan (1998), The Negotiator (1998), and Man on the Moon (1999) before he delivered his breakthrough performance playing comic book writer Harvey Pekar in American Splendor (2003).

Giamatti followed this outstanding achievement by dishing out what is arguably the performance of his career, playing the wine-loving, self-hating Miles in Alexander Payne’s Sideways (2004). He received a Golden Globe nomination for his turn but was famously snubbed come Oscar time. AMPAS apologized by nominating Giamatti for Cinderella Man (2005), a role that would win him the Screen Actors Guild award for Best Supporting Actor.

Outside of film, Giamatti won acclaim – and the Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Miniseries or a Movie – for hissideways portrayal of our second President in HBO’s television miniseries John Adams (2008). He won his second SAG award for the performance as well.

A few more titles in his exceptional resume include Barney’s Version (2010), Win Win (2011), The Ides of March (2011), and Cosmopolis (2012).

Paul Giamatti has a pretty incredible 2013 ahead of him, it seems, as he will appear in Steve McQueen’s Twelve Years a Slave, John Lee Hancock’s Saving Mr. Banks, have a voice role in Dreamworks’ Turbo, as well as appearances in up to six other films/projects. He has also been cast as the villain, Aleksei Sytsevich/The Rhino, in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, due out in 2014.
