black_rock_ver2This week, oh boy…this week. Folks, there once again isn’t any real way around the fact that nothing of any note is coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD. I’ve honestly only seen a few of the releases, and while I didn’t mind them, they’re hardly anything that I’m enthusiastic about in any way. As such, I never anticipated having to give top honors this week to the film I’m choosing. Sadly, today is one of those days that pops up once in a blue moon, so we have a top pick this week coming strictly by way of default for all intents and purposes. That’s the way it goes ladies and gents, so we’ll just have to take solace in next week being better, I assure you. In fact, next week is one of the very best slates in some time, so be excited for that! Essentially, this is just the sort of day that we have to get through in order to have better ones for the column going forward, so it is what it is. Basically, my PICK OF THE WEEK is a highly forgettable indie flick that will hopefully appeal to someone reading this. That title will get its quick moment in the sun rather shortly, but until then, lets focus in on my Vintage pick that I hope will be able to redeem us, if only a little bit. We march on!

Vintage Viewing

500-Days-of-Summer-500-days-of-summer-12443600-853-480In honor of this week’s release of The Spectacular Now (my initial Sundance rave can be found here), I’m going to be citing the previous film written by the scribes of this one. It’s (500) Days of Summer, and as many of you know, I have a deep affinity for this flick. It’s for my money one of the dozen best romantic comedy/dramedies of all time, and holds a special place in my heart. I’ve gone on and on about it over the years, so I’m keeping it brief here, but I do think that the writers have turned in another brilliant script, so before you see their new work this weekend, it pays to revisit this one…

Films In Release

With nothing to recommend besides my top pick (and barely that, if we’re being honest), here’s just a real basic rundown of what movies are coming out and hitting shelves today. None got a thumbs up from me, and only a few even got a viewing, but are any of them actually bad? Well, you can find out below…

Assault on Wall Street

This is an Uwe Boll film…need I say more?

Box Office: N/A

between_usBetween Us

I wasn’t big on this relationship drama (as you can see here), but it’s hardly terrible or anything like that. Those of you starved for a second option this week should turn to this one, but remember…I wasn’t a fan.

Box Office: N/A

Filly Brown

I didn’t get to see this indie drama and hadn’t heard anything really of note about it, but the flick managed not to overtly die at the box office, so that’s something, right? Right?

Box Office: $2,850,357

Flying Lessons

In all honesty, I had no idea that this movie existed until a few minutes before I wrote this sentence, so that should really tell you something. The lack of an actual box office haul should tell you something as well…

Box Office: N/A

G.I. Joe: Retaliation

No one was asking for this sequel that I know of, but it still hit theaters and managed to make some money. I didn’t bother checking it out, but I’m fairly sure it’s just dumb fun at best, so make of that what you will.

Box Office: $122,523,060

Rushlights

I had never heard of this film either until today, and going by the nonexistent box office cume, I’m in the vast majority there. You’re going in blind if you opt to check it out, just know that in advance here…

Box Office: N/A

TV Releases

Banshee: The Complete First Season
Star Trek The Next Generation: Season Four
Touched by an Angel: The Eighth Season

PICK OF THE WEEK

Black Rock

black-rock-review-1Sort of a Mumblecore horror flick, this movie starts out with some promise before becoming overly familiar by the third act, but in a week like this, it’s the most viable option for those looking to pick something up. Essentially a female spin on Deliverance, you definitely could do worse than this film, but I can’t lie…in just about any other week you can do better too. This is a tepid recommendation at best, but if you’re looking for one title to purchase today, this is the one to ultimately settle on…

Special Features: Behind the Scenes, Commentary, and more…
Total Box Office: N/A
Major Award: None yet, but expect nothing in all likelihood…
