This weekend, the world is still afire with ‘The Hunger Games‘ (LGF) and the brilliant cast, followed closer by ‘Frozen (2013)‘ (BV) than any other, with ‘Thor: The Dark World‘ (BV) losing its thunder to the winter queen. China still holds #1, grossing $22.7 million for ‘Gravity‘ (WB). This weekend, ‘Frozen (2013)‘ took #1, ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘ fell behind to #2, followed by new release ‘Out of the Furnace’ (Rela.) at #3. ‘Thor 2‘ drops to #4, ‘Delivery Man‘ (BV) to #5, ‘Homefront‘ (ORF) to #6, and ‘The Book Thief‘ (Fox) exploded into #7. The fully loaded and funny film ‘The Best Man Holiday‘ (Uni.) took #8, ‘Philomena‘ (Wein.) at #9, and ‘Dallas Buyers Club‘ (Focus) moved into #10, gaining momentum from the low number of releases this week. Down the lists, ‘Inside Llewyn Davis‘ (CBS) is released to #19 as many of the big names fall down the charts.

This week, Jennifer Lawrence led the way through the forest to #1 before the world froze over during the weekend. ‘Catching Fire‘ caught #1, ‘Frozen (2013)‘ blasted into #2, ‘The Dark World‘ steady at #3, ‘The Best Man Holiday‘ laughed into #4, and ‘Homefront‘ jumped up the charts to #5. Funny man Vince Vaughn delivers into #6, ‘The Book Thief’ in to #7, Judi Dench’s ‘Philemon’ in at #8, and ‘Black Nativity’ (FoxS) ends the week at #9. Finally, the four older gents with a lot of years under their belts and experience party into #10 for their last big bash in Las Vegas. This week, ‘OldBoy (2013)‘ (FD) jumped up the charts to #18 and ‘Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom‘ (Wein.) to #33.

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

New this week, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘ opens in IMAX, 3D, and 2D theaters on December 12th, and on December 13th ‘American Hustle‘ opens in limited theaters before its wide release on the 20th, ‘The Last of the Unjust‘ in limited release and wide on February 7th, 2014, and ‘Saving Mr. Banks‘ will in limited release as well until its wide release on December 20th, along with a few others in limited release. This would be a great time to re-watch ‘The Hobbit: The Unexpected Journey‘ and watch ‘Mary Poppins‘.
