Happy almost Christmas, but a great time to see movies because of the holidays! This week, on the international charts, ‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug‘ (WB) completely engulfed the world, grossing over $100 million, no other film even coming near to the take on this one. And though ‘The Hobbit 2‘ remained on top for many of the days during the week, ‘Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues‘ (Par.) managed to storm to the top of the charts for three days before Smaug defeated the power team of funny men.

This week, Gandalf lead Bilbo Baggins into #1, a comfortable lead ahead of ‘Frozen (2013)‘ (BV) in at #2, ‘Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas‘ (LGF) in at #3, followed by ‘The Hunger Games: Catching Fire‘ (LGF), ‘Anchorman 2‘, ‘Thor: The Dark World’ (WB), and ‘Out of the Furnace‘ (Rela.) at #7. ‘Philomena‘ (Wein.) upped one to #8 as ‘Delivery Man‘ (BV) downgraded to #9, and ‘The Book Thief‘ (Fox) rounded off the top 10 of the week. ‘American Hustle‘ (Sony) missed by 5, despite all of the buzz and Golden Globe nominations, along with ‘Saving Mr. Banks‘ (BV), the heartfelt story behind ‘Mary Poppins‘ (1964).

This weekend, Will Farrell and his gang jumped up one, pushing ‘Frozen (2013)‘ down one slot, and the all-star cast of ‘American Hustle‘ brought audiences in, making the jump up to #4 on the charts, a comfortable lead ahead of ‘Saving Mr. Banks‘ at #5. ‘Catching Fire‘ dropped down to #6, Madea bringing it in at #7, just ahead of new release ‘Walking with Dinosaurs‘ (Fox) at #8, ‘Dhoom 3‘ (Yash) at #9, and ‘Thor 2‘ managed to hold on to #10, just ahead of Judi Dench. Open in less than 10 theaters, ‘Her (2013)‘ (WB) placed in at #22, just behind many of the Golden Globe nominated for best film.

This week, get ready for several big releases. On Christmas Eve, ‘47 Ronin‘ opens in 3D and 2D theaters along with the much talked about and fun-looking ‘The Secret Life of Walter Mitty‘, written by and featuring the ‘Zoolander‘ himself. Then, on the 25th, ‘Grudge Match‘ will compete for film-goers against ‘Justin Bieber’s Believe‘ and ‘The Wolf Of Wall Street‘. These heavy hitters will, definitely, cause a spike at the box office next week, and should be quiet close given the sheer number of Bieber fans versus the fans of the big all-star ensemble cast in ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’. Opening only in New York and Los Angeles, ‘The Invisible Woman‘ and ‘Lone Survivor‘ don’t even stand a chance until the smoke from the heavy hitters are out of the way. Finally, rounding off the week of openings, another all-star best ensemble Golden Globe and SAG Award nominee ‘August: Osage County‘ opens in theaters on the 27th, bringing the weekend movie-goers and long-time fans of the star-studded cast to the theaters for a bit of grit, fun, and human connection.

What a Christmas week this will surely be. I cannot wait to see who comes out at #1 next week!
