Circuit 3: Comic Book Movies

It’s been a while since we ran a Circuit 3, so let’s start by refreshing everyone on how this works. We pick a category, you rank your three best and/or favorite films in that respective category. Easy enough!

With Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice hitting theaters Friday, we thought this would be a good opportunity to focus on the comic book genre. To be completely transparent, this is a category I’ve never been a huge fan of (even if I did name one of my son’s after Superman). To convey the point, I had to be told that Sin City was not a comic book movie (it’s a graphic novel, apparently), otherwise Frank Miller’s dark, gritty crime thriller would have topped my list.

In my opinion, it’s hard to measure any other comic book film up against any of the films in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. There has been nothing in the Marvel universe to top what he did with those three films. For the purposes of not being completely boring and ranking all three of his films, I’m just going to list the best of the trilogy, and then two additional films in the other two spots. Feel free to proceed as you like.

Are you seeing Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice this weekend?

My Circuit 3 for Comic Book Movies:

  1. The Dark Knight (2008)
  2. Superman: The Movie (1978)
  3. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Lover of all things film and Oscar. Fantasy sports’ equivalent of George Steinbrenner. Your very own Han Solo, making friends all over the movie-loving galaxy in spite of himself. When he’s not ranking just about everything or dominating boardgames, Mark is breaking down the Oscar race 24/7 with Rain Man-like stats and knowledge. In his downtime, you can find him commiserating with other Northeast Ohio sports fans because a hero isn’t complete without a little heartbreak. If Lost, Homeland, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and Survivor are your style, then congratulations, you have something in common with this inglourious basterd.
