Top 10 Most Anticipated Films Led by Women in the Second Half of 2016

4

It seems like every year there are all kinds of articles proclaiming that THIS will finally be the Year of Films Led By Women.

And, inevitably, every year ends up being a bit (or more than a bit) of a letdown.

Whether it is the films that actually make it to the screen, or the quality of said productions, the fact is that women are still underrepresented in major studio productions. Which is actually kind of shocking when you realize that the highest grossing film in two of the last three years has had a female lead. (Star Wars: The Force Awakens in 2015, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire in 2013.)

In fact, in 2015, five of the top ten highest grossing films featured women in leading or co-leading roles.

This year has had some interesting entries so far. There have been the disappointments, like My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2, The Boss, and Jane Got a Gun. And there have been some really good ones like Zootopia, The Conjuring 2, and 10 Cloverfield Lane.

As we enter into the second half of 2016, the half of the year where the releases tend to be richer, let’s take a look at the top ten most highly anticipated films with women in leading and co-leading roles.

But first, I want to give honorable mentions to 20th Century WomenAmerican Honey, Julieta, How to Talk to Girls at Parties, and Certain Women. They don’t yet have release dates announced, and are therefore not included on this list. Oh, and I suppose I should mention the upcoming Kevin Smith film Yoga Hosers. But since its Rotten Tomatoes score is sitting at 27%, I don’t think there is much to anticipate there.

Also, if you are frustrated by the lack of diversity in this list, please know that I am too. I tried. I really did. But there is still a serious dearth of women of color in leading roles. This needs to change, Hollywood. It’s 2016.

One film that I would throw in that I’m super excited for is American Honey by Andrea Arnold.

    • I 100% agree. The only reason it isn’t on the list is because I haven’t been able to find a confirmed release date for it.

It’s coming out in late September!

        • Darn it! I swear that wasn’t listed the other day. Well, it’s definitely on the list.
