Circuit Breaker Episode 18: Oscar’s Box Office, AFI Fest, and ‘Miss Sloane’

CircuiBreaker_CoverWelcome to the Awards Circuit podcast titled “CIRCUIT BREAKER!,” a weekly podcast from featuring host Clayton Davis along with panelists Sam Coffey, Mark Johnson and Joey Magidson. We discuss movies, television and all the awards shows that need predicting. New episodes are released every Monday. Find us on Twitter at@Circuit_Pod, email us at, and submit your comments and questions at the bottom of the episode.

On the agenda:

  • We’re looking at the top grossing films of the year so far and how Oscar may not have much to choose from in that regard.  Does this bode well for “The Jungle Book” and “Sully?”
  • AFI Fest brought the premieres of “Miss Sloane,” “Rules Don’t Apply,” and “The Comedian.”  What are their Oscar chances?
  • Taking questions and #Cinephile Showdowns

Michael Stuhlbarg was an asshole in Miles Ahead, was that what you were thinking of?

      • Joey Magidson

That would be the other “evil” type performance, but I was just thinking of a day where I saw him in every one of my press screenings. I think it was Arrival and Doctor Strange back to back.

I think due to the nature of Lead Actor this year, it is interesting to consider that Andrew Garfield is the only British actor in contention in lead. That could help him, I imagine it will at least for BAFTA.

Okay I have a question – is anyone watching Westworld? Because I swear 100% of the “hype” I have seen is all coming from the media and not from a single person I know. If I have to read the words “the next Game of Thrones” one more time I think the words will lose all meaning.

    • Joey Magidson

      I quite like Westworld.

    Power Hour Question:

Has there ever been a coincidence in a film that is so unlikely that it caused you to roll your eyes in annoyance? Because I was re-watching Training Day, and though I won’t spoil what the coincidence was, I nearly shouted ‘What are the odds?’ at my TV.

    Cinephile Showdown:

In honor of Live by Night, which is the better film from a directing standpoint- Argo, Gone Baby Gone, or The Town?
