23. Melissa McCarthy

BEST PERFORMANCE: “Bridesmaids” (2011)

It’s hard for a comedian to gain an Oscar nomination without going dramatic (see Bill Murray, Jim Carrey). However, McCarthy managed to nab one for “Bridesmaids” as the boisterous Megan. This was the same year McCarthy won her first Emmy for the CBS sitcom “Mike and Molly.” Clearly respected by her voting peers, McCarthy has ruled the box office with hits like “The Heat” and “Spy,” while also dabbling in dramedies like “St. Vincent.” Another star-making turn, such as in “Bridesmaids,” could put her in the hunt for an Oscar win.
