Academy Idol X Champion Crowned!

3

It’s time to crown our Academy Idol X Champion, but before we do that, let’s review the race this year. It was a tight competition from the rounds of 30, when we selected 12 films from the adapted/original screenplay breakdown. The one film that didn’t make it out of competition, but was selected to compete was “Zootopia,” which had finished 12th overall in votes, but finished 3rd in its group. Unfortunately for eventual Oscar nominees “Lions,” “Rogue One” and “Passengers” there was not enough votes to get them into the top 13 of the competition.

Women Film Critics CircleThis left us with a diverse group of nominees, every one of which received at least one Oscar nomination. Some films under-performed versus their runs in real life. The one that is most surprising is “Hidden Figures,” which finished in 13th place. Given the box office success of the film, there’s a chance that a wide release before we started Academy Idol X would have helped the film considerably. Perhaps the biggest surprise was “La La Land” falling in the round of 7, a surprising result given the fact it was eliminated after winning 7 Golden Globes.

Other films found strong support among our readers. “Jungle Book” ended up finishing in 6th place, but actually finished the round of 30 in 13th place (it was second in its bracket, so it made the top 12). Fans of the films came out in droves after it showed up, and pushed it into the top half of the competition. “Zootopia” also barely got into the competition but fought it’s way to 11th. Perhaps the film on the weakest legs early in the competiton was “Moonlight,” which barely escaped a few early rounds and then pushed all the way to the finals.Arrival

With that, it’s time to announce our winner of Academy Idol X! If we go back to our original round of 30, our final round match-up was starring us in the face. “Arrival” and “Moonlight” were the 1st and 2nd seeds out of their categories by a sizeable margin. That strength was a sign of things to come. However, in our final vote, the results were a landslide. Your Academy Idol X Champion is “Arrival” with over 90% of the vote. This felt like a mandate early on, and “Arrival” was the overall vote leader in ten rounds of Academy Idol. The only other film to be an overall vote leader through any week of the competiton was “Silence,” with took the title twice.

Below you’ll find the final standings of Academy Idol X. Thank you to the thousands of voters who took the polls every week.  It was also exciting to see so much support for so many different kinds of films. It was a great Academy Idol, and we thank you for all your support!

Both were equally deserving. Surprised it was such a landslide, but a great film won.
