The first look at Bradley Cooper‘s directorial debut, the latest remake of “A Star Is Born,” starring Cooper and Lady Gaga, is here! An official synopsis was also released.
The first still, which is viewable above, shows Cooper’s rock star character jamming out with Gaga’s budding starlet. The film’s official synopsis debuted as well, and it reveals that Lady Gaga will be using her real name (Stefani Germanotta) for the project. Check it out below:
Cooper plays Jackson Maine, a country music star on the brink of decline when he discovers a talented unknown named Ally (Germanotta). As the two begin a passionate love affair, Jack coaxes Ally into the spotlight, catapulting her to stardom. But as Ally’s career quickly eclipses his own, Jack finds it increasingly hard to handle his fading glory.
Other news on the film has been slowly trickling in. In March, it was announced that “Blue Jasmine” and HBO’s “Vinyl” actor Andrew Dice Clay is in negotiations to play the role of Lorenzo in the film. Should the deal close, Clay would join Cooper, Ray Liotta and Lady Gaga in the cast.
The role is described as pivotal to the film, and acts as the comic relief in the story. As Deadline puts it: “Clay will portray Lady Gaga’s ‘very Italian’ father in what’s said to be a scene-stealing role.”
Lady Gaga was reportedly Cooper’s first choice for the film after things with Beyonce fell through. It is the first big screen starring role for the singer, who made her most notable acting debut with “American Horror Story” on FX. The role gave Gaga her first Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture Made for Television. At the awards show, Gaga told the audience, “I wanted to be an actress before I wanted to be a singer.”
Gaga will continue her opportunities in that regard with the leading female role in this project. The film follows a young up-and-coming starlet who meets and falls in love with an established star whose career is declining as hers is improving. The role appeared onscreen in 1937 by Janet Gaynor, in 1954 by Judy Garland, and in 1976 by Barbra Streisand.
Gaga is also said to be performing and composing new music for the film. Eric Roth (“Munich,” “Forrest Gump”) is reportedly tackling the latest version of the script. Will Fetters and Cooper previously worked on it.
Production on the film started this month.
