The first trailer for “Black Panther” arrived on Friday night during Game 4 of the NBA Finals.
“Black Panther” tells the story of T’Challa, who is the crown prince of Wakanda. T’Challa was first introduced in “Captain America: Civil War,” and is played by Chadwick Boseman. Wakanda is an African nation so isolated many believe it is only a myth. T’Challa returns home after the death of his father to take his place on the throne. But his ascension is threatened when an old enemy returns and T’Challa is forced to resume his Black Panther mantle to save his country.
Boseman started his career with small TV roles. In 2013 he gained attention for his portrayal of Jackie Robinson in the film “42.” He also played James Brown in the film “Get On Up.” Continuing his work in biopics, he will star as Thurgood Marshall in this fall’s “Marshall.” And he is signed on for “The Avengers: Infinity War.”
In addition to Boseman, the cast includes some other familiar names. Michael B. Jordan of “Creed” plays Erik Killmonger. Lupita Nyong’o, who won her first Academy Award for “12 Years a Slave,” is Nakia. Fans of “The Walking Dead” will recognize Danai Gurira as Okoye.
Also appearing are Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Sterling K. Brown, Phylicia Rashad, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis.
Ryan Coogler is directing “Black Panther.” He is best known for his films “Creed” and “Fruitvale Station.” Both of those films garnered a lot of recognition among critic groups. Both films starred “Black Panther” star Michael B. Jordan.
“Black Panther” is scheduled for release on February 16, 2018.
