As Alexander Payne‘s “Downsizing” premiered at the Venice Film Festival, Paramount Pictures unveiled the first teaser trailer.
The film, written and directed by Payne, tells the story of a near-future world where scientists have developed a process for shrinking humans. While the procedure is intended to help preserve dwindling natural resources, it becomes a lifestyle of the rich. Paul and Audrey Safranek get caught up in wanting to live the good life.
“Downsizing” stars Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as a married couple at the center of the story. They both previously appeared in the Academy Award nominated film, “The Martian.”
Damon has been Oscar-nominated for three performances, in “Good Will Hunting,” “Invictus,” and “The Martian.” He won an Academy Award for co-writing the original screenplay for “Good Will Hunting,” and was part of the team nominated for last year’s “Manchester by the Sea.”
Wiig has one Academy Award nomination for co-writing the comedy “Bridesmaids.” She has also been nominated for seven Primetime Emmy Awards.
Christoph Waltz (“Inglorious Basterds”), Jason Sudeikis (“Horrible Bosses”), Hong Chau (“Big Little Lies”), Margo Martindale (“The Americans”), and Laura Dern (“Big Little Lies”) also star.
Alexander Payne wrote and directed the screenplay. Payne won Academy Awards or adapting both “Sideways” and “The Descendants.” He also received nominations for “Election” and “Nebraska.”
This teaser is just a first look. The full trailer is due out on September 12.
“Downsizing” is set to hit theaters on December 22.
