Universal Pictures released the first official trailer for its upcoming horror film, “Insidious: The Last Key.”
The film follows the popular “Insidious” trilogy created by James Wan. Lin Shaye returns as parapsychologist Dr. Elise Rainier, this time tasked with facing evil in her own family home. The film also stars Javier Botet (“The Conjuring 2”), Josh Stewart (“Criminal Minds”) and Kirk Acevedo (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”).
“Insidious: The Last Key” was directed by Adam Robitel. He previously directed “The Taking of Deborah Logan” and is currently working on “The Maze.” He also wrote the script for “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension.”
Continuing with his screenwriting duties is Leigh Whannell, who has now written all four installments in the franchise. Whannell also reprises his role as Specs.
The first two films in the franchise focused on the Lambert family. Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne starred as parents desperate to help their ailing son in the first film. They turn to Dr. Elise Rainier. The second found the Lamberts still fighting the evil forces from The Further. Both were directed by James Wan. The third film was a prequel in which Dr. Rainier helps a teenage girl who has been targeted by dangerous beings. That film starred Dermot Mulroney and Stefanie Scott, and was directed by Leigh Whannell.
Jason Blum and James Wan are back on board as producers. Blumhouse Productions is producing and Universal is distributing the film.
“Insidious: The Last Key” is due in theaters on January 5, 2018.
