Following festival debuts in Venice and Telluride, Paramount Pictures released the official trailer for its upcoming film, “Downsizing.”

The film stars Matt Damon and Kristen Wiig as a couple who decides to participate in a new procedure marketed as a way to solve global overcrowding.

The official synopsis reads:

“Downsizing imagines what might happen if, as a solution to over-population, Norwegian scientists discover how to shrink humans to five inches tall and propose a 200-year global transition from big to small. People soon realize how much further money goes in a miniaturized world, and with the promise of a better life, everyman Paul Safranek (Matt Damon) and wife Audrey (Kristen Wiig) decide to abandon their stressed lives in Omaha in order to get small and move to a new downsized community — a choice that triggers life-changing adventures.”

Alexander Payne wrote and directed the film. He has won two Academy Awards, both for adapted screenplay. The first was for the 2005 film “Sideways.” The second came in 2012 with “The Descendants.” He also received directing nominations for both films, and “The Descendants” was nominated for Best Picture. This is the director’s first feature film since 2013’s “Nebraska.”

“Downsizing” also stars Christoph Waltz (“Tulip Fever”), Hong Chau (“Inherent Vice”), Jason Sudeikis (“Horrible Bosses”), Neil Patrick Harris (“A Series of Unfortunate Events”) and Laura Dern (“Twin Peaks”).

Be sure to read Mark Johnson’s official Telluride Review of “Downsizing.

The film will be in theaters on December 22.
