Frank Castle is a grieving assassin out to avenge his family in the latest trailer for “Marvel’s The Punisher.” The previous teaser, released last month, was a vague nod to the Punisher’s mission to kill his family’s murderers, while the new trailer showcases Frank’s happier memories before his life went sideways.
“Marvel’s The Punisher” follows Frank Castle, an ally of Daredevil whose wife and kids are murdered in cold blood. While Matt Murdock tried his best to rein in Frank’s violent grief in “Daredevil’s” second season, he’s proved unsuccessful. Castle, played by Jon Bernthal (“Sicario”), sets out on a quest to punish those who deserve his wrath, consequences be damned.
Unlike fellow shows “Jessica Jones,” “Daredevil,” “Iron Fist” and “Luke Cage,” Castle is an antihero focused on retribution, not on saving the world. The story also seems to be far more violent than the usual Marvel fare, which makes “Marvel’s The Punisher” even grittier in comparison. Gizmodo posited that the Punisher can run virtually unchecked by the Defenders in Netflix’s MCU, as none of the heavy hitters (Thor, Captain America, etc.) are around to make him stand down if he goes too far. In a world of superheroes with virtuous intentions, the Punisher is a vigilante wildcard that might not fit into the current MCU.
“Marvel’s The Punisher” features Bernthal alongside Jason R. Moore (“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice”), Ebon Moss-Bachrach (“Girls”), Michael Nathanson (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Jaime Ray Newman (“Bates Motel”), Amber Rose Revah (“Indian Summers”), Paul Schulze (“Nurse Jackie”) and Daniel Webber (“11.22.63”). Deborah Ann Woll, who plays Karen Page in “Daredevil,” will also star. Steve Lightfoot (“Hannibal”) helms the series as showrunner, with Lightfoot writing the script based off of Gerry Conway and John Romita Sr.’s comic book characters.
“Marvel’s The Punisher” premieres sometime in 2017 (the date is mysteriously censored out in the trailer and its video description). Watch the official trailer below.
