Horror meets heroes in the newest “X-Men” spinoff. The terrifying trailer for Fox’s “New Mutants” dropped early Friday morning, and features a creepy asylum, a host of jump-scares and five teenage mutants still coming to terms with their special abilities. One thing’s for sure: this is not the usual story of comic book heroes.
“New Mutants” stars Anya Taylor-Joy (“Split”), Maisie Williams (“Game of Thrones”), Charlie Heaton (“Stranger Things”), Henry Zaga (“13 Reasons Why”) and Blu Hunt (“The Originals”), a group of fledging mutants held against their will in a secret, decrepit facility. There, they are tested by Dr. Cecilia Reyes, played by Alice Braga (“Predators”) in a series of inhuman experiments as the asylum becomes more of a haunted house than a hideaway. Will the five mutants escape before it’s too late?
The film is directed by Josh Boone (“The Fault in Our Stars”) and written by Boone, Knate Lee (“Kidnap”), Scott Neustadter (“The Spectacular Now”) and Michael H. Weber (“500 Days of Summer”) off comics created by Chris Claremont, Bob McLeod and Bill Sienkiewicz, according to THR. “New Mutants” is the first of three “X-Men” films set for release in 2018, with “Deadpool 2” and “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” to follow. But unlike its sibling films, “New Mutants” is decidedly unique. Boone told EW earlier this year:
We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.
The director has also promised fans he takes his role seriously, as he’s loved the series since childhood:
You can’t have a bigger nerd or fan making this. It’s so important to me. I’m not the 12-year-old who decided to write Stephen King a letter and loved Marvel Comics anymore, but I try to hold myself accountable to that kid…I look back and think: Would he think this would be cool? Would he proud of me? Did I fulfill the dream we had when we were kids?”
“New Mutants” comes to theaters April 13, 2018. Watch the trailer below.
