‘Happy Death Day’ Celebrates at the Top of the Box Office

“Happy Death Day” finished number one at the weekend box office, according to Box Office Mojo.

The tongue-in-cheek horror film from Blumhouse earned an estimated $26.5 million in its opening weekend. Tuning in to Halloween season horror cravings, “Happy Death Day” also earned about $5M overseas. It easily earned back its $4.8M budget with over $31M worldwide.

Blade Runner 2049” dropped into second place with $15.1M. Combining with the $50M it has earned internationally, the sci fi sequel has earned some $110M, nearing its $150M price tag.

Jackie Chan’s newest action thriller “The Foreigner” debuted in third place with $12.8M. Overseas, the film made $88M for a combined total over $100M. The huge numbers internationally put the film well ahead of its $35M budget.

It” moved down to fourth place this week, but its $6M was plenty to keep it in the Top 5. The Stephen King adaptation is one of the biggest successes of the year. With a budget of $35M, “It” has earned about $315M in the US, with a worldwide total of $630M. It is the fifth highest grossing film of 2017.

The Mountain Between Us” dropped to fifth place with $5.6M. The plane crash survival story has made $20M domestically and another $10M in overseas markets. The Kate Winslet/Idris Elba film is still just short of its $35M budget.

Tom Cruise’s “American Made” finished in sixth place with $5.4M. The action/thriller/biopic cost $50M to produce, and has earned $40M in the US, plus about $72M internationally.

Kingsman: The Golden Circle” added $5.3M to its four-week total, for seventh place. The spy/action/comedy has earned $89M in the US and passed $286M worldwide.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie” added $4.3M this week. The animated LEGO film has earned about $51M in the US, but hasn’t quite been able to cross $100M for a worldwide total. It currently sits at $96M.

My Little Pony: The Movie” earned $4M in ninth place, for a two-week total of $15M.

And finishing out the Top 10 is the historical drama “Victoria & Abdul” with $3.1M. The Judi Dench film had the smallest drop from last week and has earned about $40M worldwide.

Next week’s new releases include “Geostorm,” “Same Kind of Different as Me,” “Only the Brave,” “A Madea Halloween 2” and “The Snowman.”

    I saw a sneak peak of Only the Brave last night, and it’s pretty good. It falls into a similar vein of Deepwater Horizon, so you’ll know how you feel about it depending on how you felt about that.

    • Interesting. I was getting kind of a Perfect Storm vibe and I hate Perfect Storm. But I like Deepwater Horizon.
