Sony Pictures released the first official trailer for its upcoming horror film, “Slender Man.”
The film tells the story of four teenage girls in a small town in Massachusetts who perform a ritual in an attempt to debunk the lore of Slender Man. When one of the girls goes missing, the remaining friends believe she is his victim.
Slender Man originated as an internet meme in 2009 by Eric Knudsen for the forum Something Awful. The “legend” gained national attention in 2014 in Wisconsin. Two middle school girls stabbed their friend in a near-fatal attack in an effort to appease the fictional monster.
The film stars Joey King (“The Conjuring”), Julia Goldani-Telles (“The Affair”), Jaz Sinclair (“Paper Towns”), Annalise Basso (“Captain Fantastic”), and Javier Botet (“It”).
After years of working in television, Sylvain White returns to direct the feature film. White has directed episodes of “Person of Interest,” “MacGuyver,” and “The Americans,” among others. His last feature film was the 2010 picture “The Losers” with Idris Elba, Zoe Saldana, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
David Birke wrote the script. He previously wrote “Elle,” and is working on an adaptation of “The Picture of Dorian Grey.”
The film is produced by Bradley J. Fischer, James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Robyn Meisinger (“Prisoners”), Sarah Snow. Fischer and Vanderbilt worked together on “Zodiac” and “White House Down.” They teamed again with Sherak to produce “Suspiria” by Luca Guadagnino.
