Amazon Studios released the official trailer for its upcoming film, “Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far On Foot.”
The film stars Joaquin Phoenix as John Callahan, a man who won’t quit drinking, even after nearly losing his life in a car accident. Rooney Mara plays his long-suffering girlfriend, who encourages him to enter rehab, where he meets his sponsor, played by Jonah Hill.
Jack Black, Udo Kier, Beth Ditto, and Carrie Brownstein also appear.
The film is based on Callahan’s memoir. It is billed as an “insightful and often funny drama.”
Joaquin Phoenix is very busy this year, starring in three additional films. One, “You Were Never Really Here,” earned him an acting prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival. It will be in theaters in April. He also stars in “Mary Magdalene” in March, and western “The Sisters Brothers,” which does not yet have a release date.
Rooney Mara also stars alongside Phoenix in “Mary Magdalene,” in the title role. She will also reunite with Garth Davis for the thriller, “A House in the Sky.”
Jonah Hill is doing a number of voice projects, as well as the upcoming TV series, “Maniac” for Netflix.
Gus Van Sant writes and directs the script from Callahan’s autobiography. Van Sant has been twice nominated for Best Director, for the films “Good Will Hunting” and “Milk.” The first was nominated for 9 overall Oscars, and the second for 8. Each won two.
“Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot” will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival this week. It will be in theaters on May 11.
