Under the radar, Ben Affleck and Gavin O’Connor made a successful action flick back in 2016 with “The Accountant.” Silly yet effective, it was a bit of a throwback to the types of star based action films we don’t get too often anymore. Considering the mixed response that Affleck has received as Batman, this potential franchise starter is one that could be a priority going forward for the actor, as well as Warner Brothers. We’ve already reported on a sequel being in the works, but it seems like Affleck and O’Connor have enjoyed collaborating, since that won’t be their only opportunity. Plus, not only is “The Accountant 2” being developed, the pair now have a spec script that they’re looking to make as well.
According to Deadline, the actor and director are circling around a movie called “The Has-Been.” Written as a spec script by Brad Ingelsby, it sounds like a sports tinged drama, one that has a familiar feel. As you’ll see below, the plot could be described as an edgier version of the inspirational stuff that Disney puts out. Still, Affleck is a talented actor and O’Connor has experience with this stuff. Just go revisit “Miracle” and you’ll see the skill the filmmaker has.
This is the description from the article:
The script by Ingelsby has drawn strong interest around town. It centers on a former basketball all-star who has lost his wife and family foundation in a struggle with addiction. He attempts to regain his soul and salvation by becoming the coach of a disparate, ethnically mixed high school basketball team at his alma mater. Affleck wants to play the former hoops star, and O’Connor would direct.
Who knows, maybe this will be good enough that it’ll turn into an awards play for Affleck? He certainly could use that kind of a hit. Stay tuned for more on the movie when we have it.
