Now here’s a combination of talent that is really hard to ignore. Coming off of “Logan” and its success, filmmaker James Mangold is pretty hot right now. Anything he opts to do is worth taking note of. Then, you throw in two of the biggest stars in Hollywood, namely Christian Bale and Matt Damon. That’s a duo who you’d watch in just about anything. Then, you make it a film about some of the fastest cars in history, and that’s something. The movie in question is the still-untitled film tentatively titled on IMDB as “Ford vs. Ferrari,” and it has just been given a prime piece of 2019 real estate.
Variety is reporting that 20th Century Fox is primed to release the film on June 28th of next year. While that may make it more of a popcorn entertainment type of flick than an Oscar contender, that’s still a great show of faith. Fox may not be shooting for Academy Award contention, but putting it up against blockbusters? You must be confident in your material. “Cowboy Ninja Viking” is one of the would-be juggernauts in that date already, so make of that what you will. Mangold is directing a script by Jez Butterworth and John-Henry Butterworth, of “Edge of Tomorrow” fame.
Here’s a bit about the movie from the article:
The film follows an eccentric, determined team of American engineers and designers, led by automotive visionary Carroll Shelby (Damon) and his British driver, Ken Miles (Bale), who are dispatched by Henry Ford II and Lee Iacocca with the mission of building from scratch an entirely new automobile with the potential to finally defeat the perennially dominant Ferrari at the 1966 Le Mans World Championship in France.
Caitriona Balfe will portray Miles’ wife and Noah Jupe will play their son. Jon Bernthal has been in talks to portray Iacocca. Chernin Entertainment is producing.
Watching Bale and Damon build Ford race cars to go up against Ferrari at Le Mans could be a lot of fun. Stay tuned for more on this one when we have it.
