Back at the Tribeca Film Festival a few months ago, we were rather taken by “Zoe.” Our highly positive review noted that the latest from filmmaker Drake Doremus was one of his most effective works since “Like Crazy.” This time around, Doremus is again marrying romance with science fiction, much like he did in “Equals” a few years ago. A Tribeca staple of late, Doremus found a better reception for this one than he’s had in some time. The movie was picked up by Amazon Studios, and with a release planned for late next month, a Trailer has been released. It’s a Prime Video exclusive, so it may skip theaters, which is a shame, as this is a visually interesting flick.
The film stars Ewan McGregor and Léa Seydoux in an exploration of love, filtered through science. Doremus co-wrote the movie with Richard Greenberg, while the supporting cast includes Christina Aguilera, Theo James, Rashida Jones, Miranda Otto, and more. As you’ll see in the Trailer, it’s a hugely emotional work. At the same time, it’s inquisitive and intelligent in the sort of way great science fiction is. This is way more about romance than it is a sci-fi work, but it’s still a tremendously effective mix.
This is a piece of our Tribeca review:
Throughout his career, filmmaker Drake Doremus has been examining the human experience. In particular, he seems fascinated by emotion, with love at the top. “Zoe” is his latest treatise on it, and it’s one of his best. Subtly moving, the film never opts to go over the top, always staying in service of not just its high concept, but also its core beliefs.
Here now is the “Zoe” Trailer:
“Zoe” will be released by Amazon Studios on July 20th. We liked it. You’ll be able to see for yourself in less than a month.
