The “Men in Black” franchise has clearly been an important property to Sony Pictures. Over the past few years, news has continually bubbled up about the new spin-off currently being developed. The film has already grabbed three certified stars in Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, and Liam Neeson. Now, it sounds like the new “Men in Black” film is filling out its cast.
According to The Wrap, two more actors joined the project. Rafe Spall and Kumail Nanjiani will be joining the ensemble, although nothing has been revealed about their characters. Spall is coming off a villainous turn in the box office juggernaut “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” this summer. He also received praise for his lead performance in “The Ritual” for Netflix. Meanwhile, Nanjiani has been a shining star in the industry. He received an Oscar nomination with his wife, Emily V. Gordon last year. He also continues to light up television with “Silicon Valley” on HBO.
Given the cast that is assembling, the new entry in the “Men in Black” universe looks to continue its comedic ways. The original trilogy, starring Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones, did an excellent job in capturing the tone of the franchise. The weird and questionable humor was ultimately what held back subsequent sequels. That said, it is easy to imagine Nanjiani in a slew of roles opposite Hemsworth, especially in a comedic setting. It might be a little frustrating to box Spall into the role of the villain again, but if utilized correctly, Spall is talented enough to shine.
