Director Trey Edward Shults stormed onto the film scene with “Krisha” in 2015. Shults quickly added to his resume with last year’s “It Comes a Night,” which proved his auteur chops for many. Shults is clearly a rising star in the industry, so it was only a matter of time for actors and writers to flock to him. Now, it looks like his next film is going to be a great change of pace. His next feature, “Waves” will be a musical and begins production next month.
According to Variety, “Waves” has drawn considerable interest from actors. Two of the big names in discussion right now are Sterling K. Brown and Lucas Hedges. Brown is the reigning Emmy winner for Outstanding Actor in a Drama Series and made his name on “The People Vs. O.J. Simpson” in 2016. Hedges has been one of the busiest actors in Hollywood. After receiving an Oscar nomination for his work in “Manchester By the Sea,” he appeared in both “Lady Bird” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” last year.
The film also appears to be a pseudo-jukebox musical. Shults is looking to mix in contemporary songs as he follows two young couples as they fall in love. Yet it won’t just be contemporary music featured in the film. The score is going to be written by none other than Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, winners for the score on “The Social Network” at the 2011 Oscars. As if the film didn’t already have heft behind it, A24 is producing and distributing the film. With production set to begin in the next month or so, expect more news to come quickly.
