Move over Jason Statham, there’s a new a villain in town. It appears that Idris Elba is going to join one of the best action sagas around. According to Variety, Elba will play the villain of “Hobbs and Shaw,” the “Fast and the Furious” spinoff. While it is not official yet, final negotiations are in progress. This has been a good week for the “Fast and Furious” spin-off. Earlier this week, Vanessa Kirby (“The Crown“) also joined the film as well. This also comes after news earlier in the summer that “Deadpool 2” director David Leitch would helm the film.
The fight to get the Dwayne Johnson led picture has been going on for some time. After “Fast 5” debuted in 2011, many thought a spin-off was imminent. Johnson plays Hobbs, a law enforcement agent looking to take down Vin Diesel’s crew in Brazil. However, over time, he gains respect for the team and brings them in to help with international crime. Hobbs made sense as a spinoff character, but after a rather public feud with Diesel, the progress has been slow. Despite this, Jason Stathem and Johnson flashed chemistry in “Fate of the Furious,” enough to garner support for the spinoff to finally get going.
With Leitch on board to direct, the film promises to be something special. Considering Elba’s ability to play menacing, cartoonish, or physical villains, there are a lot of directions to take the film. Chances are that he will be more of psychological threat, given that few can outclass the combination of Statham and Johnson as a physical duo. Considering the speed with which the film is moving, it seems we’ll find out sooner rather than later.
