The past eight months have been interesting for “Star Wars,” a franchise once thought to be one of the most inspiring in all of film. Yet with controversies continuing to come from the franchise, questions surround the series. Several directors have now been let go during the production process. A subsection of fans have rebelled against “The Last Jedi” and how it changed the franchise. “Solo: A Star Wars Story” divided fans again. Several women from the series have had to leave social media due to the harassment. It’s an oddly tough time for the franchise despite the progressive steps it continues to take. Luckily, it seems help is on the way from Keri Russell and J.J. Abrams.

According to Variety, Russell is in early talks to join the franchise in an undisclosed role. Anyone familiar with Russell’s work knows this would bring one of the most talented actresses the franchise has ever seen into the fold. Russell knows Abrams well too. One of her breakout projects was the Abrams’ created show “Felicity,” which ran from 1998 to 2002. Russell showcases intensity and skill across her various roles in both film and television. She received multiple Emmy nominations for her work on “The Americans,” which just concluded it’s final season. She also starred in breakout the independent hit “Waitress” in 2007 and the blockbuster “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” in 2014.

The question now, is how will Abrams use Russell? There is sure to be a subsect of the internet ready to crown her as Rey’s (Daisy Ridley) real mother. This remains the subject of much controversy at from fans, so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Abrams try to clean this up for audiences. However, Russell is a very skilled actress. It would be wise to potentially introduce her as a rebel fighter or wholly new character to the franchise. Regardless, we’re still a year and a half away from the new film releasing, so expect more casting announcements in the coming weeks.
