One of the most interesting directors to emerge in the industry over the past few years is Yorgos Lanthimos. The Greek director has been popular with cinephiles dating back to “Dogtooth” in 2009. He broke through with the Academy in the weird and controversial “The Lobster” and received rave reviews for “The Killing of a Sacred Deer” just last year. Lanthimos has fully established himself as an auteur, and his most recent film “The Favourite” looks to continue his style. The first teaser trailer for the film comes to us from Fox Searchlight.
The latest from Lanthimos takes a drastic departure from his settings of “The Lobster” and “Killing of a Sacred Deer.” Despite this, it maintains his aesthetic through and through. The film stars Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone as the three main characters of the film. However, the cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Joe Alwyn, and Mark Gatiss. The period setting looks like it will make the film more Academy-friendly, if only in the tech categories.
A synopsis of the film is available from IMDB.
In early 18th century England, a frail Queen Anne (Colman) occupies the throne and her close friend Lady Sarah (Weisz) governs the country in her stead. When a new servant Abigail (Stone) arrives, her charm endears her to Sarah.
The trademark coldness and timing of Lanthimos’ style is present throughout the trailer. There look to be some moments of extreme violence or graphic imagery as well. Considering Lanthimos’ track record, this should be a high-quality film, regardless of its popularity with the Academy. His previous work with Weisz and Colman was outstanding, so look for more of the same in this film when it releases.
