Historical dramas have often been seen as the quickest way to get Academy attention. There are dozens of nominations that actors have gained from these kinds of movies, from “Beckett” to “Darkest Hour” last year. Last year, “Dunkirk” and “Darkest Hour” grabbed 14 nominations between them. When British history comes alive, there are plenty who pay attention. When you add two actresses nominated for an Oscar last year to the same project, you know the world will pay attention. That’s where we sit with “Mary Queen of Scots” as it begins its push for Oscar.
Today, we got a better look at both Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie with individual posters for each of the characters. The two actresses are coming off career peaks, with Ronan receiving a Best Actress nomination and leading “Lady Bird” to a Best Picture nomination. Robbie produced and starred in “I, Tonya,” and helped garner the film 3 Oscar nominations as well.
The IMDB synopsis for “Mary Queen of Scots” is as follows:
Mary Stuart’s attempt to overthrow her cousin Elizabeth I, Queen of England, finds her condemned to years of imprisonment before facing execution.
Even these posters should raise excitement for the film. Burgundy poster for Robbie hiding her bright red hair is perfection. The royal blue behind Ronan gives the character a calm demeanor, despite the violent acts she will eventually commit. The film is clearly going to be a contender barring a catastrophic film. The acting talent doesn’t stop there. The film also has roles for actors like David Tennant, Guy Pearce, Jack Lowden, Gemma Chan, and Joe Alwyn. Headlined by two of the best actresses working, this one will be a predictor favorite for months to come.
