After the “Justice for Barb” internet campaign made Shannon Purser internet famous, the actress quickly began to pick up roles. Purser’s role as Barb on “Stranger Things” made the internet turn its head, and helped her grab an Emmy nomination for Guest Actress in a Drama. She also appeared in “Riverdale” later that year, giving her character a “Me Too” push back against jocks seeking to sexually exploit her. Now, Netflix may have snuck up on audiences with a Cyrano De Bergerac-esque comedy.
“Sierra Burgess is a Loser” follows a young girl in high school. Sierra (Purser) struggles to make friends, and due to her looks, no one pays attention to her. She seems to be mortal enemies with many of her classmates, and can’t seem to get a boy to like her. School and band are her passions, and while she wants to get into Stanford, she needs more. That’s when a boy begins to text her, believing she is popular girl Veronica (Kristine Froseth). After making a deal with Veronica, the two begin down the road to trick the jock Jamey (Noah Centino) into liking her.
The movie is pretty straightforward and doesn’t seem like it cares if it draws from other popular teen flicks. This will almost certainly not be an Oscar contender, but it could still become a Netflix hit quickly. With a September release date, it could pick up steam as students go back to school. The film also features some popular actors, including Chrissy Metz, RJ Cyler, Lea Thompson, and Alan Ruck.
