This week has been a good one for the cast of “Black Panther” as they pursue their next projects. Earlier in the week, actor Winston Duke was got a Kimbo Slice biopic off the ground. Now, actress Danai Gurira is making her move. One of the stars of “The Walking Dead,” Gurira has a more established career as an excellent action hero. With her potential next two projects, she could become a worldwide box office sensation.
According to Deadline, Gurira is in talks to join two established IPs. First, Gurira is looking to star in “Godzilla vs. King Kong” from director Adam Wingard. Whether the film will carry over actors from “Godzilla: King of Monsters” is yet to be determined, but Gurira would take a leading role. At the moment, she has engaged in early talks, so little is concrete yet. However, the action star is also circling the next “Star Trek” film. New director S.J. Clarkson is helming the next film in the beloved franchise, and Gurira could be an important piece for the franchise going forward.
Both films would be a big step for Gurira, yet they somehow seem small in comparison to her 2018. After all, it’s not every year that an actor stars in the 3rd and 4th highest Box Office grossing Domestic releases ever. Still, putting Gurira into a starring role instead of the role of Okoye would allow her to become a bigger star. At the same time, Okoye should feel confident in the news that Scarlett Johansson is finally getting a “Black Widow” movie as well. If Gurira helms two more successful franchises, an Okoye movie might not be far behind. In the meantime, we’ll have to wait for Okoye and the rest of the MCU to return in “Avengers 4” next year.
