One of the most grisly murders in American history still inspires film and television adaptations over a century after it occurred. The Lizzie Borden murder drew national outrage and attention in the late 1800s after Borden was accused of the double homicide of her father and stepmother. While Borden was found not guilty, speculation about the case continues to this day, with Christina Ricci reprising the role several times. Now, Chloë Sevigny will take on the role with Kristen Stewart in a supporting role for “Lizzie” from Roadside Attractions.

The trailer conveys the mystery of the story well, and Sevigny looks to be the standout. Sevigny often receives underrated status and considering she’s still without a nomination. Stewart also appears to be delivering a subtle performance, which she has proven to be very good at. The trailer mixes strong thriller elements, strong tension, and the potential for extreme violence. Placing the film somewhere between a horror film and an intense thriller is a wise way to tell the story. Our own Karen M. Peterson reviewed the film at the Sundance Film Festival, where it premiered in January.

Director Craig William Macneill is well versed as a horror director, so this tension is not a surprise. MacNeill drew a fair amount of attention for his surprisingly creepy flick “The Boy” from 2015. With “Lizzie” and “The Boy,” Macneill should be a director to keep an eye on when he works in horror. The question facing “Lizzie” is whether it can muster the support for Sevigny to gain some traction. It’s possible, but with other horror films like “Hereditary” sucking the air out of the room, it might be difficult. However, there’s a real chance she shows up with some critics groups, so don’t count her out.
