Maniac

Netflix has begun to identify some areas of its programming where it can hope to pick up additional Emmy nominations in the future. A group of categories the streaming service had seemingly left alone was the Limited Series branches. That is, until they acquired “Black Mirror” before it’s 3rd season. Since then, the sci-fi series has helped Netflix increase their Emmy count, and showed a positive viewership for obscure Sci-Fi. Since then, Netflix has doubled down. One of the most anticipated series coming from Netflix in the coming weeks is “Maniac” from Cary Joji Fukunaga, and stars Jonah Hill and Emma Stone. Today we received a full trailer.

Just a couple of weeks ago, we received a teaser from Netflix at TCA. The teaser was interesting, but didn’t really shed light on the upcoming series. This full-length trailer does a lot to show the weirdness and excitement that should follow “Maniac” as it comes closer to airing. The series stars Oscar-winning actress Emma Stone and two-time Oscar nominee Jonah Hill as its lead characters. The two are involved in a scientific experiment run by Justin Theroux and Sally Field.

The world that Stone and Hill will embark into feels far grander and far more action-packed than one might have guessed from early production images. While the images from “Maniac” felt more like an asylum, we see Stone and Hill travel across realities and times to portray various versions of their characters. There are strong hints that it’s a love story, or at least one revolving around a connection. Fukunaga looks like he’s going to have some great moments in this series to showcase his skill. Same for Stone and Hill. Expect “Maniac” to be a big hit when it debuts in September.

“Maniac” drops on Sept. 21, 2018. Netflix will handle distribution.
