Few actresses in Hollywood feel more destined to find their way to an Oscar stage than Maggie Gyllenhaal. The actresses continually puts out some of the best work in the industry, crossing both film and television. She’s received one nomination in the past but has come close a handful of times. Gyllenhaal continues to make the push towards Oscar, and “The Kindergarten Teacher” could be her ticket to another nomination.
Today, Netflix released a new trailer for the Sundance acquisition. “The Kindergarten Teacher” was met with strong reviews from the festival, particularly for Gyllenhaal’s performance. Our own Karen M. Peterson was very high on the film, giving it 3 1/2 Stars back in January.
The film follows a Kindergarten teacher attempting to help a gifted child continue his education. She goes to great lengths to help this student, even to the point of kidnapping apparently. Gyllenhaal looks extremely strong in the role. The trailer showcases her hitting a variety of emotions, from hopefulness, to sadness, to happiness. A multileveled performance from Gyllenhaal looks like it could be some of her career-best work.
The cast and crew on the film features some solid talent. Director Sara Colangelo takes her first turn behind the camera since her directorial debut “Little Accidents” in 2014. Gael García Bernal features heavily in the trailer, which looks to give him a more upbeat role than usual. Rosa Salazar has a strong role as well, which could continue to advance her upward trajectory. Michael Chernus, Anna Baryshnikov, Sam Jules, and Daisy Tahan all feature in the film as well. The Sundance hit could score with audiences, and with Netflix distribution, it will be very easy for people to see. It’ll be interesting to see if Netflix can parley that into awards buzz.
