The move towards creating more diverse superheroes has been something brewing in Hollywood for years. Films starring minority groups remain woefully underrepresented in the world of superheroes. “Black Panther” became one of the great sensations at the box office this past February, and may even earn a Best Picture nomination. Marvel took time to get their act in gear, but now the comic book giant is rolling on all cylinders with “Captain Marvel.”

UPDATED: Entertainment Weekly released more images at 12:30 PM (EST). They’re included below the Sept. 14 cover.

With Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson on board to star as “Captain Marvel,” the origins of one of the great superheroines is about to make its way to the big screen. Today we got our first images of the superhero on the cover of Entertainment Weekly.

The film is undeniably a landmark for the representation of women in superhero films. Larson used a considerable amount of her capital to help this movie get into production. Her clout extends beyond her Oscar win. Larson became an activist years ago, especially around topics involving women and sexual assault. Making her the face of women superheroes for the MCU is a wise move for Marvel. Anna Borden and Ryan Fleck direct, making Borden the first female director in the MCU. It’s little surprise the film is slated for release in time for International Women’s Day. It’s a big step forward, and after the success of “Wonder Woman,” it’s an exciting time for ladies in the superhero world.
