If there’s one thing you can say about Roland Emmerich, he is very familiar with big-budget filmmaking. Not all of the films have been hits, but large-scale epics remains one of his specialties. “Independence Day” is likely his most successful film, and holds a special place in pop culture from the 1990s. “Stargate,” “Godzilla,” and “The Patriot” continued that big budget scope. While Emmerich may inhabit the same space as Michael Bay in some circles, he has found success in spurts. This makes his next film, “Midway” an interesting next picture.

According to Deadline, Emmerich’s “Midway” officially grabbed a Veterans Day release day for 2019. The $100 million picture will open on November 8th, making it a potential awards player to watch for in 2019. While Emmerich’s films are often more feats of visual style, this one has a rather strong cast. Woody HarrelsonAaron Eckhart, Mandy Moore, Patrick Wilson, Ed Skrein, Nick Jonas, Luke Evans, and Dennis Quaid are just part of the ensemble. This suggests that Emmerich may have a comeback in store with “Midway.”

For those unaware, the Battle of Midway remains one of the most important battles of World War II. In June of 1942, American forces won a decisive victory over the Japanese forces. It was only 6 months after Pearl Harbor, the American forces were struggling in the Pacific. Midway marked a turning point in the war. While 300 American troops died, over 3000 Japnese soldiers perished. American forces also sunk 4 aircraft carriers and almost 250 planes.

On paper, this looks like it could be another “Pearl Harbor” on the horizon. That said, “Pearl Harbor” received four Oscar nominations, winning one. Emmerich usually brings great visual effects, and this seems primed for a nomination there. Keep an eye on this one, which stands to be a big hit in 2019.
