WATCH: Netflix Drops a Trailer for ‘Private Life’ from Director Tamara Jenkins

The last time Tamara Jenkins directed a film, we got the very strong family drama “The Savages” in 2007. That film struck a chord with critics and Academy voters. It earned a pair of Oscar nominations for Laura Linney and for Jenkins work on the screenplay. Jenkins continues to showcase talent, and early on, her new film “Private Life” grabbed strong reviews. After premiering at Sundance, the Netflix feature took time to release. Now, after a run at TIFF, Netflix released a trailer showcasing Kathryn Hahn and Paul Giamatti.

The trailer follows Giamatti and Hahn as they deal with the issues of infertility on a marriage. They are joined by Sadie (Kayli Carter) as they try to navigate the difficult time. John Carol Lynch and Molly Shannon both co-star as well.

The two actors bring their A-game throughout the trailer, with a special emphasis on Hahn. The reviews have been strong for the indie drama that continues to carry on Jenkins unique perspective on family drama. Her stories feature heartwrenching moments and based on the trailer, there is no reason to expect anything different from “Private Life.”

Giamatti and Hahn each seem like performers who could figure into the Oscar race. While the Lead Actress category features top-level talent this year, Hahn’s performance looks very different from many of the frontrunners. Giamatti deserves an extra push, especially given his overdue factor at the Academy. Expect the Indie Spirits to pay attention to their work, and if luck falls on their side, they can win a handful of critics prizes each. It’s exciting to see another film from Jenkins, and with room in the original screenplay race, she could factor in there as well. While “Private Life” will not be a focus for Netflix, it can make noise.
