The push for women in superhero films began years ago. Sadly, many did not meet expectations, with “Catwoman” and others flaming out. However, women have long been key figures in the genre, including Michelle Pfeiffer in “Batman Returns” and Scarlett Johanson in “The Avengers” from 2012. When “Wonder Woman” made Gal Gadot an instant star, and pushed for a Best Picture nomination in 2017, many studios changed their tune. Then, Marvel announced that Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson would suit up as the cosmic superheroine. This made the already in development “Captain Marvel” a focal point for the future of the MCU. Despite being teased the trailer weeks ago, we now have our first look at the trailer and Larson in the film.
The story of the film looks to be very fun, bouncing between outer space and the world on Earth. A young Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) meets up with Carol Danvers, a former air force pilot. It appears that the story will take Danvers from her home on Earth into the cosmos. The film takes place in the 1990s, years before the events of “Iron Man” launched the MCU. Danvers must piece together her past with her cosmic purpose. However, it appears a secret invasion may be at hand on Earth.
The new film will mark a benchmark for the MCU, as Danvers and Larson represent the first female-led film in the studio’s history. Larson, an outspoken activist, pushed hard to make this movie and looks committed to making this a hit. The cast also features some very strong talent around her. Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn, and Gemma Chan are on board. Lee Pace will return as Ronan the Accuser, and Dijmon Hounsou comes back as Korath. Both helped launched “Guardians of the Galaxy” into the stratosphere. If I had money on it, “Captain Marvel” looks like it might be one of the biggest hits in the MCU.
